Red Cedar’s core ensemble, violinist Miera Kim and cellist Carey Bostian, once again team up with their sons, emerging artists Oliver and Adrian Bostian, for their third new program in as many months of self-isolation. Biber, Bach and Beethoven features three different combinations of instruments. Biber’s Sonata Representativa will be played by violin and cello, with new artwork by composer Philip Wharton and verses by Janet Burroway. Bach’s Sonata for Viola da Gamba and Harpsichord Obligato, BWV 1027 will be presented with Carey on the solo part and Miera and Adrian playing the right and left hand parts of the harpsichord on their respective instruments. Finally, Beethoven’s monumental String Trio, Op. 9, No. 1, includes violin, viola and cello, with Oliver joining his parents as violist.

In an effort to continue reaching audiences all over Eastern Iowa, Red Cedar decided to make the most out of the artistic capital available to them - their family of musicians. Red Cedar is a Marion-based organization, but the directors live in Iowa City in the historic Musser/Dixon house just east of College Green Park. The family has been making music together ever since their sons began studying piano at age 4. Both boys began studying a stringed instrument at age 8, Oliver the violin and Adrian the cello. For years they traveled cross-country with a keyboard and four stringed instruments so they could perform for extended family at their summer beach vacation. These days, the boys are active in music programs both at Iowa City City High School and the Preucil School of Music.
